Papers consist of correspondence, financial and property records, slave records, legal documents, estate records, and other items. Correspondence is mostly among Mitchell family members and pertains primarily to financial affairs and land transactions. Correspondents include cousins Samuel Wragg and Benjamin Grier, Nelson Mitchell (nephew of Thomas R. Mitchell), and Charlotte Mitchell. Financial and property records include receipts, accounts, bonds, bankbooks, titles (1798) to land in Kingston (Georgetown District, S.C.), and a plat (1753) of land on the Black River in Georgetown County (S.C.) conveyed to Thomas Mitchell. Slave records include bills of sale and a slave mortgage (1826). Legal documents chiefly pertain to a dispute over the estate of Thomas Mitchell. Estate records include the will (1784) of Thomas Mitchell, and receipts and accounts for the estate of Thomas Rothmahler Mitchell (Nelson Mitchell executor). Other items include financial records of Nannette Mitchell, and her will (1818).

Georgetown, S.C. attorney and United States Representative. He was the son of Thomas Mitchell, a Georgetown merchant and South Carolina state Representative, and Anne E. Rothmahler. Their other children included Nannette Mitchell and Charlotte Mitchell, who married her cousin Thomas Mitchell, son of Anthony Mitchell. Thomas Rothmahler Mitchell graduated from Harvard in 1802.
